Ethics for the Pharmacy Technician

The role of the pharmacy technician continues to expand. With these new opportunities comes an increased need to understand the ethical principles that the profession of pharmacy is based upon. This monograph will describe the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficience, non-maleficence, veracity, and justice. Brief case vignettes that encourage the pharmacy technician to explore how to work through common ethical situations in a variety of workplace settings will also be reviewed. Upon completion of this knowledge-based activity, Pharmacy Technicians will be able to:

  1. Define the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficience, non-maleficence, veracity, and justice.
  2. Discuss the relationship between ethical principles and the Code of Ethics for Pharmacy Technicians
  3. Identify potential ethical conflicts in a variety of workplace settings.
  4. Apply ethical principles to case vignettes in order to recommend an appropriate course of action.
