Electronic Devices and Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword

Electronic devices and social medical are a reality of life. Studies show that 95% of teenagers today own a smartphone. Almost half of teenagers describe themselves as “constantly connected” to the Internet. 95% of teenagers use at least 1 social media site and more than 70% maintain a “social media portfolio” of several selected sites.
This presentation will discuss measures to help safeguard the developmental foundations of mental health and support optimal functioning and wellbeing across the lifespan.

1. Define the potential benefits and risks associated with use of electronic devices and social media use, especially in childhood and early adolescence.
2. Analyze the key mechanisms linking early smartphone ownership to adverse mental health outcomes.
3. Evaluate the rationale for a precautionary public health approach to childhood smartphone and social media access.
